Swedish Massage Or Deep Tissue: Which One Is the Right Choice For You?

As you’re getting into the world of massage therapy, you may start to hear terms you’ve never thought of when it comes to bodywork. What is a “Swedish” massage? Is “Deep TIssue” better for your tension? Which one is the right fit for you? This post is for anyone looking to educate themselves, discover different options for pain relief, and get into the habit of better self-care!

Our relaxation massage, also known as Swedish Massage, is traditionally focused towards stress relief, relaxing and renewing your body through gentle and slow movements. Though it can help with tension and pain relief, these techniques are primarily used for relaxation, and are meant to push surface-level stress away. All our therapists are known and loved for their skills with relaxation, from individual sessions to couples!

Our main office at 1001 State St, Suite 1322, Erie PA.

Angela H., Butler PA – 5 stars – “This place was extremely client friendly. My boyfriend and I had never gotten massages before, so based on the reviews we came here. Definitely recommend. The environment is so relaxing and they make it so everything is how you like it. Best first massage I could’ve asked for, no doubt!!”

Christian Z., Erie PA – 5 stars – “I have received 3 or 4 massage sessions here with many different therapists, and each time I am more than satisfied.  Their work has done absolute wonders for my chronic headaches.  All of the staff are wonderful and experts in their craft.  The environment is very welcoming.  I recommend them to everyone I know that mentions massage.”

Susannah F., Erie PA – 5 stars – “Best place to get a massage in Erie County!”

Besty M., Erie PA – 5 stars – “Great Massage and always a superior experience overall. From the relaxing massage room to the warmed massage table, and the expert massage therapist!”

Our Deep Tissue massage is traditionally recommended for pain relief, injury recovery, and any tension beyond the tip of the iceberg, releasing stress in your muscles through firmer pressure and trigger point therapy. Depending on the amount of pressure you feel comfortable with your therapist using, these sessions may trade the feeling of relaxation for lasting relief from chronic pain. We have a few therapists on staff that are known for their deep tissue work, and the reviews speak for themselves!

Carl Holmes, LMT (PA#MSG012724)

Janis F, Erie PA – 5 stars – “Amazing experience. I went for the sports massage. After training for an upcoming Tough Mudder, my body was sore and in need of help. Carl was AMAZING. Hands of a god! He was extremely knowledgeable about what was going on and knew exactly what I needed. Also was good about follow-up things to do to help in the future. I can't wait to get back. So glad I found this great place [in downtown Erie] and Carl Holmes!”

Tammy Moon, LMT (PA#MSG013628)

Shannon R., Erie PA – 5 stars – “This was my first time away from my 3 children since my 3rd was born in February.  I'm happy I chose Monacella Massage [in Erie, PA]!  … The deep tissue massage was with Tammy .. The massage was molded to fit what I needed.  For a mother of a 3 year old, 1 year old, and newborn, it was the perfect break and "me time" I needed.  I already scheduled another massage with her in 2 weeks!”

Jo Hodges, LMT (PA#MSG015344)

Julia H., Erie PA – 5 stars – “Absolutely wonderful experience. I had Jo as my massage therapist and she was phenomenal. She did a check in beforehand and worked out some intense knots in my upper back. I feel awesome! The space overall was relaxing and comfortable. […] Jo went above and beyond. Looking forward to making my next appointment!”

Missy Schmalenbach, LMT (PA#MSG006570)

Vicki A., Corry PA – 5 stars – “I had been suffering for months with shoulder and neck pain. My chiropractor recommended I see a massage therapist. Missy S was fantastic.  She was so thorough and I have not felt this good in months! Thanks, Missy!”

Ryan Logan, LMT (PA#MSG014676)

Terry H., Erie PA – 5 stars – “I had a Deep Tissue Massage with Ryan Logan. Ryan is a very intuitive [massage therapist]. He diligently was able to work through the knots in my muscles. I highly recommend him and this business.”

Abigayle Parry, LMT (PA#MSG015454)

Holly C., Erie PA — 5 stars — “I’ve been on the hunt for a new massage specialist, and I think I found her[.] Abigayle was fantastic, and you can tell that she really cares about and really enjoys her work. That really matters to me, and it’s exactly the kind of vibe I want from someone who is helping me care for my body.”

With each of these techniques, there can be pros and cons dependent on the client’s needs and wants in a session. Sometimes, lighter relaxation techniques and pressure can have a similar effect to deep tissue when you’re in an autoimmune flare. Sometimes, deep tissue with the firmest pressure a therapist can provide is comparative to a relaxation session for clients. Knowing your own body is an important part of the process, from deciding your focus areas in session, to choosing a therapist!
