Hot Stones & Heat Therapy: At-Home Health Beyond Your Session

Written by Jo Hodges, LMT PA#MSG015344

As a massage therapist here at Monacella Massage & Kinesiology, I see a range of opinions on the value of hot stone massage services. Some see it as nothing more than a luxurious spa treatment—a placebo that comes at a premium because of its appealing presentation. Others see it as a beneficial therapy for conditions like arthritis, where the application of heat can provide relief. Many naysayers and supporters alike may not realize that hot stone massage is deeply rooted in ancient healing practices, influenced by early understandings of health, changing seasons, and environmental factors. With practices that span thousands of years, it’s clear to see that people are reaping benefits of heat therapy such as hot stones – but why? What is it about heat that makes our aches and pains lessen, and how can we use that with massage therapy?

Heat therapy can cover a wide range of modalities, starting as simple as a hot shower. Methods like warm compresses, hot baths, and hot stones have been commonplace for at least 5000 years, seen in Ayurvedic routines to balance the body. Heat makes the blood vessels expand, promoting circulation and pliability in muscles. The result is more flexibility, increased range-of-motion, less stiffness, soreness, and tension! If you’ve been following along, you know from September’s post that those ‘knots’ you feel in your body are often due to limited blood flow and oxygen. Applying heat can help naturally boost circulation and relieve these tight spots! According to a study in 2020, that circulation can come into play when it comes to hypertension (high blood pressure), insulin regulation and resistance, and vascular dysfunction; all conditions, as shown in the research, that are common risk factors for Alzheimer’s Disease. These scientists concluded that a heat-centered practice, such as hot stone massage, can improve brain function and circulation to the point of helping with preventing Alzheimer’s! Paired with massage therapy, it’s easy to see why there’s a connection for relaxation and pain relief.

One of the best things about heat therapy is the range of options and constant access! Lack of access to care has been proven to be the main barrier between a client and health services, whether it’s caused by finances, schedule conflict, non-accessible location, etc. The reason beneficial therapies like hot stone have become ‘spa’ services in our modern world can come from this access issue, stopping clients from booking something that is helpful for chronic pain and cognitive function. At Monacella Massage, we strive to bring you the care you need with half off our Hot Stone massage add-on this November, saving you $15!

Whether you’re melting stress away or trying to soothe inflammatory conditions like arthritis, our hot stones add-on is for you! While hot stones are a favorite among heat therapies, every massage session includes a heated table for added benefits with each experience. With the chill of fall finally arriving this week, there’s no better time to see how a session can change your chaos to calm. Wishing you a wonderful November—enjoy all the fall festivities around Erie this month!
