Why the Theragun?

A woman receiving a back massage from a male therapist using a Theragun tool.

The Theragun is available as an add on to any massage. Go here to schedule. But our question today is WHY the Theragun? Why should you add this on and in what circumstances is it most helpful?

What exactly is the Theragun?

The Theragun is a a percussive and vibratory, hand-held, deep tissue device. You’ve probably seen them being touted by professional and amateur athletes alike, and you may have noticed people are even starting to buy them to have at home.

One word of caution if you’re using this on yourself or a loved one: be careful. Start gently and go slowly. Try it in smaller bits of time and build over time. A lot of people will set it at too high a setting right out of the gate, use it for far too long the first time, and end up causing more harm than good.

This is just another reason to have a massage therapist calibrating what is actually good for you.

How does it work?

Firstly, because they are so powerful, it’s thought that the Theragun can affect the muscle tissue at a deeper level than hands or rollers.

Secondly, it does what hands or rollers do but better: it increases blood flow to the affected area, reduces muscle inflammation, releases muscle tension, and decreases knots.

Thirdly, some believe that the Theragun decreases post-massage soreness and decreases recovery time.

What’s it good for?

  • One study shows that the Theragun is great at diminishing the delayed soreness that can set in over the 48 hours after you have an intense workout.

  • As we said at the start, they tend to be extra popular with athletes and weekend warrior types.

  • There are some people who get an increase in their range of motion from regular usage.

  • The vibration is actually meant to help block pain signals so it can help decrease pain from possible injury or inflammation.

  • People who regularly use the Theragun are also reporting better deep sleep.

  • It can help to break up scar tissue.

  • Some athletes are using them pre-workout to increase the efficacy and speed of warming up.

  • The vibrations of the Theragun can also improve lymph drainage.
